What to do for my 6 mth olds really bad cold?

he's had a very stuffy nose and a mild fever for the past 48 hrs. it's so bad that he has trouble breathing and so he is not sleeping well..i tried using the bulb syringe and the baby noses saline drops,i've tried sitting in the bathroom with the shower running so that the steam may break it up.it is starting to drain in to his tummy some though because he NEVER spits up and has been spitting mucus up all day long..but he is still very stuffy,,and irritable..i don't wanna take him to the doctor just yet because i know it is only a head cold and there really is nothing that they can do for him....are there any other suggestions anyone has..he hasn't much of an appetite,,so i've been getting him to take what he will of his formula,,he did fairly decent with his fruit this morning but wanted nothing to do with the cereal..and i've also given him some baby juice... i really just want to find a way to make him comfy so he can rest some..any ideas would be helpful and appreciated....thanks.....
