I have a 9 month old Mastiff pup. When his tail hits us it hurts. Is cropping his tail best?

I don't want to put him through pain. But I've heard there can be reprecussions if we don't get his tail cropped for instance; him breaking it. I'd love to hear opinions as to why/why not to crop his tail.
